Scientists observed some intriguing DNA alterations, such as in sections linked to fat processing, that might help Arctic bears cope when food is scarce. Animals in temperate zones had increased rough, plant-based food intake versus the blubber-focused diets of Arctic bears, and the DNA of south-eastern bears appeared to be adjusting to this shift.

Godden stated: “Scientists found several active DNA areas where these jumping genes were highly active, with some found in the critical areas of the DNA, implying that the animals are experiencing swift, significant evolutionary shifts as they adjust to their melting Arctic home.”

Further Study and Broader Impact

The next step will be to study different polar bear populations, of which there are numerous worldwide, to observe if similar modifications are occurring to their DNA.

This research may assist conserve the animals from extinction. However, the experts stressed that it was vital to slow temperature rises from escalating by lowering the burning of carbon-based fuels.

“We cannot be complacent, this provides some optimism but is not a sign that Arctic bears are at any diminished risk of extinction. It remains crucial to be doing everything we can to reduce greenhouse gas output and slow climate change,” summarized Godden.
